Sports Massage Therapy in Chelsea, NYC
Sports massage is the most misunderstood service in massage therapy. It's not a harder deep tissue massage. It's not a reward for training hard. It's a clinical tool — and when used correctly it changes how you perform and how you recover.
At Capricorn Bodyworks our sports massage work is clinical, targeted and built around you as an athlete — not a generic protocol applied to anyone who walks through the door.
What Makes Sports Massage Different
Sports massage isn't simply deep tissue massage with a different name. The distinction is meaningful and it shows up in how every session is approached.
Where deep tissue massage addresses chronic tension and pain patterns throughout the body, sports massage is organized around your specific athletic life. The sports you play. The training you do. The movements you repeat. The injuries you've accumulated. The competitions or events you're working toward.
That context changes everything — which muscle groups receive priority, which techniques are most appropriate, how much pressure is productive versus counterproductive, and critically — where you are in your training cycle. The work you need two days before a race is fundamentally different from the work you need two days after one. Sports massage accounts for that. General massage doesn't.
Performance and Recovery — Both Matter
The best sports massage programs address both sides of the athletic equation simultaneously.
On the performance side:
Chronically tight muscle groups limit range of motion, reduce power output and create movement compensations that eventually become injuries. Targeted sports massage work keeps the musculature supple, balanced and mechanically efficient — so you can train harder, move better and perform at your actual ceiling rather than the ceiling your tight hip flexors are imposing on you.
On the recovery side:
Training breaks tissue down. Recovery is where adaptation happens — where the body rebuilds stronger than before. Sports massage accelerates that process by improving circulation to fatigued muscle tissue, reducing the inflammation and soreness that follow intense training, and addressing the specific areas of accumulated strain before they become chronic problems.
Both matter. Neither works optimally without the other.

Who We Work With
Our sports massage clients include runners, cyclists, Hyrox athletes, gym athletes, martial artists, weekend warriors and everyone in between. What they share isn't a sport or a performance level — it's a body that works hard and needs skilled clinical attention to keep working hard.
You don't need to be a professional athlete to benefit from sports massage. You need to be someone who moves — and who wants to keep moving well.
Our Approach
Every session begins with a thorough intake conversation. We want to know what you're training for, where you're at in your cycle, what's bothering you and what's been bothering you for longer than it should. That information shapes everything that follows.
From there the work is systematic and specific — organized around your athletic history and current needs rather than a templated sequence. We adjust pressure, technique and focus in real time based on what the tissue is telling us and what you're telling us.
You'll be professionally draped throughout — only the area being actively worked on will be exposed at any time.
Sports massage at Capricorn Bodyworks can be booked as a standard 60 or 90 minute session. Every session is fully customized regardless of length.
