DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE
There's a version of massage therapy that's about relaxation — and honestly, there's nothing wrong with that. We actually put real thought into creating a calm, comfortable environment at Capricorn Bodyworks. Soft lighting, a quiet room, a table you'll actually want to be on. The atmosphere matters and we don't take it for granted.
But we'd be doing you a disservice if we stopped at comfortable. Our therapeutic deep tissue work is clinical, intentional, and results-driven. The calm environment puts you at ease. The skilled clinical work puts you back together.
What Is Deep Tissue Massage?
Deep tissue massage is a therapeutic technique that applies slow, sustained pressure to the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. Where a relaxation massage works primarily on the surface, deep tissue work goes further — systematically addressing the underlying layers of tissue where chronic tension, adhesions and dysfunction actually live.
Your therapist isn't just rubbing your back. They're reading the tissue, identifying areas of restriction, and working deliberately through layers of muscle to release what's holding you in pain. It's skilled, purposeful work that requires real anatomical knowledge and genuine clinical intuition.
The pressure involved is firm and can feel intense in areas of significant tension — most clients describe it as a productive discomfort. It should never feel like actual pain and communication throughout your session is always encouraged. We adjust based on what your body needs and what you can comfortably receive.
Neuromuscular Therapy — The Layer Beneath
Deep tissue massage alone is powerful. Combined with neuromuscular therapy, it's exceptional. Neuromuscular therapy targets trigger points — hypersensitive spots within muscle tissue that generate referred pain patterns throughout the body. That headache behind your eye might be a trigger point in your upper trapezius. The pain radiating down your arm could be originating in your neck or shoulder musculature. The burning sensation in your hip might be coming from your lower back.
Trigger points are frequently the missing piece in chronic pain that doesn't respond to other treatments. Identifying and releasing them alongside deep tissue work produces significantly better outcomes — addressing the source of your pain rather than just the location where you feel it.
At Capricorn Bodyworks neuromuscular techniques are integrated into our deep tissue sessions routinely. It's not an add-on or an upgrade — it's simply how we work.
Sports Massage — Performance and Recovery
For our athletic clients deep tissue work takes on an additional dimension. Sports massage applies similar principles — firm pressure, targeted technique, detailed anatomical focus — with specific attention to the demands of athletic training and competition.
Whether you're a runner dealing with chronically tight IT bands, a cyclist managing hip flexor dysfunction, a Hyrox athlete recovering from overuse, or a weekend warrior who pushed too hard — our sports massage work addresses the specific muscle groups and movement patterns relevant to your activity.
The goal is twofold: accelerate recovery from existing strain and reduce the risk of future injury by keeping the musculature supple, balanced and functional. We work with athletes at every level from dedicated amateurs to competitive professionals.

Our Approach
Every session at Capricorn Bodyworks begins with a thorough intake conversation. We want to know where it hurts, how long it's been going on, what makes it better, what makes it worse, what you've already tried, and what you're hoping to achieve. That information shapes everything that happens on the table.
From there, your therapist works systematically through your areas of concern — reading the tissue, adjusting pressure and technique in real time, and always keeping the clinical goal in focus. Sessions are never templated or scripted. What we find on the table determines what we do about it.
You'll be professionally draped throughout your session — only the area being actively worked on will be exposed at any time.
Most clients leave their first session with a noticeable reduction in tension and improved range of motion. Some experience mild soreness in the 24 to 48 hours following treatment — similar to the feeling after a good workout — which typically resolves quickly and is usually accompanied by a meaningful improvement in how the affected area feels overall.
How Often Should You Come In?
For acute or chronic pain conditions, we typically recommend starting with weekly or bi-weekly sessions to build momentum and address accumulated dysfunction. As things improve, most clients transition to monthly maintenance sessions — staying ahead of the problem rather than constantly catching up to it.
For athletes, the timing is often dictated by training cycles — more frequent work during heavy training blocks, maintenance sessions during recovery periods.
Your therapist will make specific recommendations based on your individual condition and goals at your first session. There's no one-size-fits-all answer, and we won't pretend there is.
All therapists at Capricorn Bodyworks are fully licensed in New York State and trained in advanced clinical techniques.
